We believe it takes more than good academic results to succeed at Baker & McKenzie. We look for people with a 'can do' attitude who are willing to take responsibility and seize opportunities, who want to make a difference and who are excited by what our global connectivity can offer. People who succeed here have interests that are global, not just local. They understand and are interested in issues that affect the corporate world like politics, the environment and economics. While our focus is definitely on professional excellence, the culture here is social, relaxed and inclusive. People who like working in teams, contributing to the social glue of their peers and who are confident in expressing their views yet open to new ideas succeed best at Baker & McKenzie.
Our summer clerks are given access to real work, exposure to Australian and global clients (including client secondments) and a chance to participate in our outstanding professional development programs. Our partners and lawyers will involve you in research, client meetings and whatever work is happening in each of your practice group rotations. We assign all clerks a buddy to help you settle in to life in our Firm. There are also numerous networking and mentoring opportunities available during your time with us.
The Sydney Summer Clerkship Program runs from November to February. Over 12 weeks, clerks rotate through two practice groups. In 2007/2008, we had 14 summer clerks in Sydney.
We also offer International Clerkships to selected summer and seasonal clerks each year from Sydney and Melbourne. They have the opportunity to spend up to four weeks in any Baker & McKenzie office, anywhere in the world, in the year following their Clerkship.
Applications must be submitted online via cvMail (www.cvmail.com.au) and should include a cover letter, a CV and a copy of your most recent academic results. Applications open for Summer Clerkships in Sydney on Wednesday, 2 July 2008.
Most of our graduates in Sydney and legal trainees in Melbourne have completed a Seasonal or Summer Clerkship with the Firm, however we also recruit graduates who have not done a Clerkship.
Graduates in Sydney complete three rotations over two years and legal trainees in Melbourne complete four rotations over one year before they join a particular practice. All new lawyers participate in both a targeted development program - aimed at supporting the transition from law school to law firm - and the regular professional development programs specific to each practice group. We also hold national development workshops for new lawyers from Sydney and Melbourne throughout the year.
Additionally, the firm offers new lawyers the opportunity of a three month secondment to one of our Asia Pacific offices during their first three years of joining. This is a unique opportunity to experience the culture and legal work of another office, and develop contacts within the Baker & McKenzie network.
