Please visit www.allenovery.com/careers and search for Australia. You will need to complete the online application and attach your CV and covering letter.
What is the interview process?
You will have an interview focusing on the information on your CV with a partner and a member of our HR team. We will look for examples and evidence of teamwork, communication skills, planning and organisation, problem solving, commercial awareness and commitment - to a career in law.
What can I expect from a summer clerkship?
You will spend nine weeks working in the Sydney office from 6 December 2010 to 11 February 2011 (with leave between Christmas and New Year). You will have the opportunity to undertake two rotations; one in one of our Banking practice groups and the other in one of our Corporate practice groups. You will be involved in a variety of interesting matters and work with lawyers at all levels. Added to this, there will be opportunities to socialise and get to know your fellow summer clerks and Allen & Overy colleagues.
If I don't do a summer clerkship with you can I apply for a graduate position?
Our summer clerkship program is key to our graduate scheme. We hope to fill our graduate positions for 2012 from the 2010/2011 summer clerkship.
What can I expect from the graduate rotation program?
Graduate intakes will be in March and September each year. You will have the opportunity to undertake at least two six month rotations; one in Banking and one in Corporate, with the option to undertake a third rotation if you choose. We also have existing international secondment programs through which opportunities are available to spend one of your six month rotations in another one of our global offices or a period of time at a later stage in your career.

There are more firms that offer Summer Clerkships than those listed in the 2010 LSS Clerkship Guide! One of those firms is Gadens Lawyers.
The following is a letter from Vinod Kumar, a solicitor in Corporate Finance at Gadens:
"Applying for summer clerkships can be a painful process. For the next six months, conversations at uni will be punctuated with the words "second round offer", "top tier", "M&A" and "distinction average". You might even find yourself bizarrely memorising the answers to questions that are about you. And sadly, unless your name is prefixed with "The Honourable...", you're probably going to get your fair share of rejection letters.
The bad news is that if you want to work in a top commercial law firm, summer clerkships are the best way to start. The good news is that it doesn't have to be excruciating - it can be rewarding and, if you go to the right place, it can actually be a lot of fun.
Yes, I said it.
But where is the right place? If you went to the careers fair, you probably heard the same spiel from most firms. Big clients. Pro bono work. Work/life balance. As the top law firms in Australia, these things should be expected of us. Christmas parties, trivia, sports and Friday night drinks are not selling points - they come standard as a reward for hard work and excellence.
I started at Gadens a few years ago as a summer clerk. The single biggest difference I've found here is the quality of work that is given to the juniors - interesting and substantive legal work. My opinions are not only tolerated, but they are encouraged and, in the rare instance that I say something vaguely intelligent, they are even taken on board.
While Gadens is a top ten national firm, we don't take ourselves too seriously. This means we certainly won't take you too seriously. We won't ask if you "set a goal and were able to achieve it" or "showed initiative and took the lead" - we would rather hear about the time you fainted at a Justin Bieber concert.
You don't need to stress out about the application. You don't need to stress out about the interview. And, if you're made of the right stuff and get the gig, you definitely don't need to stress out when you come in to work.
If you do choose to apply, bear in mind that someone has to read through all those applications. So it's only fair that there is a special bin with a little basketball hoop above it reserved for any application addressed to "Gardens Lawyers" or written in Comic Sans.
On the flipside, you're sure to be asked in for an interview if you satisfy one of this year's special criteria:
• provide proof that you auditioned for "Australia's Got Talent";
• translate Chapter 23 of Justice Austin's decision in ASIC v Rich into "txtspk"; or
• submit an application that is honest, original and engaging enough to attract the attention of the partners and HR team."
