Student volunteers needed!

Bush Law website

A volunteer is being sought after to construct a content management system website for the Bush Law project.

The project is centred around a half-hour documentary introducing the concept of Indigenous and mainstream cooperation in improving the effectiveness of the criminal justice system in its application to Indigenous Australians. The project and proposed website is aimed at generating discussion and information sharing on the topic.

The website will ideally have the following components:

a. facilities for on line forum discussion on topic
b. details of past and upcoming screenings of the Bush Law documentary and relevant seminars/ conferences/ meetings
c. on line payment facilities for purchase of private screening copies of the DVD and details of ABC link for purchase of educational/ community/ government/ public viewing copies.
d. photos and links to footage of forums/ seminars on topic - eg. recent UNSW forum.
e. the film trailer (2 minutes long)

The volunteer will liaise directly with film maker Danielle Loy in setting up the site.

The benefits of the site is that it will enable participation by students and anyone else who wants to, in discussion about the concept of Indigenous involvement/ input in the Australian legal system. The current situation is that despite billions of dollars being invested into the mainstream Australian Criminal Justice System, violent crime in Indigenous communities is at an all time high. Many Aboriginal people believe that if Indigenous people had greater input into legal policy and mainstream law, including the formal recognition and implementation of Indigenous law in the mainstream legal system, that crime rates would dramatically reduce and the lives of many Indigenous people would improve.

If you are interested in volunteering, or wish to find out more about this project, contact Danielle Loy.
