Client Interview involves a simulated conference in which teams of two interview a potential client for the first time. The objective is to clearly ascertain the legal problem, or problems, that their client faces and then work with them in order to achieve an appropriate outcome. Prior to the simulation, competitors will only have a brief idea as to the nature of the issue, however, they will not be required to have any knowledge of the substantive law relevant to these issues. Instead, Client Interview urges competitors to draw upon their interpersonal and professional skills in order to put their prospective client at ease.
Client Interview draws upon interpersonal skills and forces students to listen, act and respond in a professional way to put the prospective client at ease. The competition aims to provide students with an opportunity to develop their client interview technique and enhance their skills of perception and communication, proficiencies which are essential in day-to-day legal practice. Rather than being directed at legal research like some of the other competitions, there is no need for specific research or review prior to each round of Client Interview.
How to Participate
Client Interview at UTS is divided into two broad categories:

- Open Client Interview is run over four/five weeks in the Autumn semester. This competition is open to all financial members of the UTS LSS.

No previous experience is required!
Historically, students often begin at the junior level before attempting a senior competition. However, there is no experience pre-requisite for any competition and those students who enter Senior Client Interview without experience will learn the necessary skills quickly.
