Get involved in our Open Competitions this semester! Registrations will open in early 2017!
The UTS LSS would like to formally announce several structural changes to the way in which competitions will be conducted this year. In order to foster a fair competitions atmosphere, the UTS LSS has moved to align our competitions regime with other universities to ensure students of similar experience and knowledge compete at the same level.
This year, the UTS LSS will run two competitions as follows:
- “Open Competitions” in the Autumn semester, open to all students enrolled in and studying a degree offered by the UTS Faculty of Law; and
- “Junior Competitions” in the Spring semester, limited to first and second year students who are enrolled in and studying a degree offered by the UTS Faculty of Law and who have not competed in the respective competition previously.
These changes seek to create more balanced and enjoyable competitions. In previous years, registrations for Junior Competitions have been capped due to overwhelming numbers, often resulting in first- and second-year students missing out. From this year, students in or beyond their third year of study will not be able to enter the Junior Competitions.
The new “Open Competitions” will be open to all students, regardless of experience. The UTS LSS encourages any student, whether or not they have competed in the respective Junior Competition previously, to participate. Historically, each semester students without prior experience entered the (former) “Senior Competitions” and were successful in their results.
Accordingly, the UTS LSS is seeking to address issues with retention of teams beyond the Junior Competitions and wishes to break down any perception that the Open Competitions are for experienced competitors. Rather, by introducing an unrestricted competition the UTS LSS hopes to see a rise in the number of teams and an increase in the quality of the rounds.
