The United Nations Youth Association is one of Australiaʼs largest youth organisations, a non-for-profit community, run by volunteers aged between 15 to 24. Since its creation in the 1970ʼs, the organisation has continuously aimed and strived to increase the level of youth awareness based on the values and principles of the United Nations, through promoting and facilitating discussion and dialogue of key and widespread international issues and simultaneously providing inspiration and encouragement for youth to take a more active involvement as leaders and decision makers.
The United Nations Youth Association NSW Division, as a divisional body of United Nations Youth Association Australia, coordinates events in accomplishing and reaffirming these prevalent goals and principles, ranging from educational workshops with professional guest speakers with expertise in a particular area, competitions which individuals are able to argue current, confronting global issues and conferences which simulate the pragmatic workings of the bodies and entities of United Nations itself, in understanding and comprehending the realistic conflicts and opportunities between nation
states.
As many of UNYAʼs current programs, initiatives and overall agenda have generally emphasised and targeted secondary students, the National Youth Summit is the first development by the United Nations Youth Association aimed at tertiary students, as the sequential step in further engaging and stimulating sustaining youthʼs concerns towards maturity and adulthood.
The schedule for this week will consist of various programs of interaction and debate: workshops, discussion groups, guest speakers, and social events that will provide an opportunity for students to interact and build networks outside the conference, which will accumulatively complement an individualʼs university studies and prove beneficial in their future career.
Fundamentally, the principal purpose of forum and debate will be to develop a document called a Youth Declaration, the end-product in which outlines, amends and provides solutions of current national policies in regards to the theme of ʻHuman Rightsʼ. This document will be shown and presented at the end of the week at Sydney Town Hall, in which various representatives of Federal and State Government and Media will be present.
The aim to achieve a target of 200-250 delegates, diverse in various studies and geographical locations. We believe that the success and outcome of the National Youth Summit and its successive conferences, essentially rests on the quality, expertise and voice of the delegates. It is that with these individuals, the National Youth Summit will represent a direct and unified, than symbolic testament and response of Australiaʼs passionate, concerned and dedicated youth can collectively achieve, and foreshadow the future progress and movement forward towards an educated, operational and active society.
As the main priority of the National Youth Summit is dependent on the conferenceʼs delegates, it will be one of my main responsibilities in ensuring regular contact with you, in achieving this crucial and central objective.
