Expenditure declarations due: Thursday, 25 October 2018 at 5pm
Results will be announced at the AGM on Saturday, 27 October 2018 at 10am in the Faculty of Law Boardroom (CB05B.05.003).
ELECTION INFORMATION NIGHT
We would encourage those that have any questions about the process or questions regarding a position within Council to attend the upcoming UTS LSS Election Information Night being held on Tuesday 18 September at 6pm.
The night will comprise of a 1-hour discussion involving a 2-3 minute overview from each of the 2018 UTS LSS Councillors on their respective roles. We will also cover the election procedure, nomination procedure and campaign rules.
HOW TO NOMINATE
A person may nominate to be an individual candidate for the Election by lodging an Individual Candidate Nomination Form in accordance with Annexure A of the UTS LSS Constitution.
Persons who wish to appear as an Executive Ticket for the Election shall lodge an Executive Ticket Nomination Form in accordance with Annexure B of the UTS LSS Constitution.
All forms must be emailed to the Electoral Officer, Katya Shliapnikoff, at email@example.com by 5pm on Sunday, 7 October 2018, that is, the close of the nomination period. Late nomination forms will not be accepted.
You may nominate for two positions and must indicate your first preference. This is the position you must take if you receive the highest votes in both nominated positions.
You may nominate for any two positions but may not nominate for two positions on an Executive Ticket, or for a position on an Executive Ticket and an Executive individual candidate against that ticket.
Where individual candidates are uncontested, the voting will be between that individual candidate and a vote to ‘Reopen Nominations’. If the latter succeeds, this position will be treated as a casual vacancy under section 23 of the UTS LSS Constitution.
STATEMENTS OF CANDIDATURE
All candidates nominating for an elected position may lodge a Statement of Candidature with the Electoral Officer prior to the close of nominations.
The Statements will be made available to all UTS LSS members and will be posted on the UTS LSS website.
The Statement of Candidature must be:
- Times New Roman font, size 12, 1.5 spacing
- 2cm margins
- 1 A4 sized page
- Submitted in word format
Details must include:
- Candidate name;
- Position nominating for;
- Student number of Candidate; and
- Ticket name (if applicable).
Including a photograph of yourself is optional.
The Electoral Officer reserves the right to not publish any Statements that do not comply with these rules.

CONSTITUTION AND BY-LAWS
Before nominating, it is imperative that you read and understand all of the conditions contained in the Constitution and By-Laws of the UTS LSS, which may be found here: http://www.utslss.com/about-us/constitution-by-laws-minutes/
The Constitution contains the Election Regulations (Appendix 1), which prescribe (among other things):
- Eligibility requirements for nomination;
- Rules concerning voting;
- Permissible and prohibited forms of campaigning;
- Election spending limitations;
- Complaints procedures;
- Sanctions for breaches of the Election Regulations; and
- Appeals procedures.
The By-Laws outline the obligations attached to each position, which will assist you to determine the position(s) for which you may wish to lodge a nomination form.
All permitted forms of campaigning may commence at 9am on 8 October 2018 and must cease at 5pm on 24 October 2018. You must not campaign outside these dates in any form.
All campaign materials must have a candidate’s name and student number featured. For executive tickets, the primary contact’s name and student number.
Individual candidates must not refer to another candidate, whether positive or negative. This includes inferences to another candidate. Executive ticket candidates may only refer to candidates within the ticket.
Candidates must not use any facilities or property owned by the UTS LSS (including the UTS LSS office, printers, computers, email addresses, contact lists, etc.) in the course of campaigning.
Candidates must not release information that is untrue, misleading, discriminatory or defamatory.
Other rules concerning campaigning methods or practices, as determined by the Electoral Officer each year:
- Nominees may not solicit votes in person using their own hand-held technological devices (mobile phones, tablets, laptops etc.).
- Only candidates are allowed to engage in campaigning activities on campus.
The Electoral Officer reserves the right to create and/or amend rules concerning campaigning methods or practices, which apply to all nominees equally, with notice to be given to the nominees.
An expenditure cap applies to all candidates and must not be exceeded:
- Individuals – $120.00 per position
- Tickets – $1000.00 per ticket
Candidates nominating for two positions must apportion their expenditure accordingly per two spending caps.
Whilst a candidate may receive discounted materials and donations; all materials will be taken at the reasonable market rate for goods and services and must be accounted for. Ownership of current items must also be accounted for.
Candidates may use any online methods available without charge.
A complete summary of Election Expenditures must be disclosed by 5pm on 25 October 2018.

It is vital all receipts are scanned and submitted. It is advised that you take a photo of any receipts once received to avoid misplacing them.
Voting will be open from 9am on Monday, 22 October until 5pm on 24 October 2018.
The method of voting will be via an online platform facilitated by UTS Governance Support Unit. All UTS students enrolled in a law degree are eligible to vote and must log on to the system using their student ID and password. The link will be circulated once it has been confirmed.
Each position will be listed as a separate election link. Those candidates in an Executive ticket will be indicated through brackets after their names.
Candidates will be elected on the basis of ‘1’ votes only. This includes the Socials Directors, Careers (Activities) Directors, and Subject Mooting Directors (two highest ‘1’ voted Candidates). Preferential voting will not be considered unless in the determination of a tie between Candidates.
ANNOUNCEMENT OF ELECTION RESULTS
The Announcement of the election results will be made at the UTS LSS Annual General Meeting (AGM). The AGM will be held at 10:00am on Saturday, 27 October 2018 in the Law Faculty Board Room.
DISQUALIFICATIONS FOR BREACH OF ELECTION REGULATIONS
The rules contained in the Election Regulations are comprehensive. Any breaches result in automatic disqualification.
