“If you are motivated, hungry to learn and eager to engage with the world around you then Anti-Slavery Australia is the place to be. It is more than just a stamp on your resume. It’s a truly educational, fun and rewarding experience.”- Anti-Slavery Australia Volunteer
Despite being outlawed nearly 150 years ago, slavery still affects over 21 million people around the world, including in Australia. Anti-Slavery Australia is the only specialist legal, research and policy centre in Australia focused on the abolition of human trafficking, slavery and slavery-like practices including forced labour and forced marriage. For over 12 years from our base in the UTS Faculty of Law, we have supported survivors of severe exploitation through research, advocacy, training, and specialized legal advice.
You can help: There are so many ways that UTS students can volunteer with us to support survivors of slavery, trafficking, forced labour and forced marriage right here in Australia. You can assist with legal work, research projects, policy papers, draft content for our publications, websites and social media, or be involved with our outreach programs including community engagement and events. We also offer Practical Experience Placements in our legal practice with two intakes each year.
Volunteers who have worked with us have found it to be an extremely rewarding experience and many have gone on to work in the legal profession with a strong human rights and social justice focus.
Read about the experiences of one of our volunteers here:
“Like a lot of people, I started my journey in law because I wanted to “do something good” and “give back” to the community. But often those good intentions got lost due to time pressures, the hunt for paid work and social commitments.
In life, it is a very rare and humbling experience to be able to work with people who are passionate about what they do and to know that your contribution has a direct and positive impact on someone else’s life. For (not only) those reasons, completing my PLT at Anti-Slavery Australia was one of the best decisions I have made. You will gain invaluable experience in learning your craft and witnessing the power that it has to change the course of someone else’s life. I can’t speak highly enough of the wonderful and dedicated team that make Anti-Slavery Australia such a model advocate for human rights and the abolishment of modern day slavery. If you are motivated, hungry to learn and eager to engage with the world around you then Anti-Slavery Australia is the place to be. It is more than just a stamp on your resume. It’s a truly educational, fun and rewarding experience.”
